In praise of the companies Kroodsma highlighted that;

" The commitment of the CEOs goes beyond what would be needed just for marketing or "green washing." Dow Chemical is much larger today than in 1990, but, through an aggressive effort, they have cut carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent. Coca-cola is attempting to reduce emissions from all of its first world factories by five percent by 2015. Duke Energy lobbied the government to ask for a price on carbon dioxide and also pulled out of the "American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity." The job of these CEOs is to maximize the value of their companies--not save the planet. The review provides a comprehensive overview of major voluntary standards and initiatives in the forestry, coffee, cocoa, tea and banana sectors; following the remarkable rise in environmental and social standards for commodities in recent years.

The 2010 review revealed that major voluntary initiatives are altering the way supply-chain decision-making takes place, by providing civil society and developing country stakeholders with a more active role in setting trade rules and production practices. Overall it was found that environmental criteria are the most prevalent and robust criteria, with social requirements focussing on the ILOs core conventions, worker health and safety and employment conditions. Economic criteria were the least developed across initiatives and were increasingly focussed on transparency and sound commercial relations.

Download the full review here.
In the Media 332 Wed, 24 Nov 2010 00:00:00 -0500 Mary Robinson Speaker Series on Business & Human Rights Launched on YouTube http://www.accountability.org/about-us/news/index.html#329
The Mary Robinson Speaker Series launched in October 2010 is now available on YouTube.
