National Competitiveness in a Low-Carbon Future

Head of Programmes at AccountAbility, Alex MacGillivray, launched AccountAbility's latest initiative - National Competitiveness in a Low-Carbon Future: Preparedness, Opportunities & Policies as part of the RC Climate Change Competitiveness Index at the Business for the Environment Global Summit held in Singapore in 2008.

This new initiative from AccountAbility in partnership with United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) has two ambitious goals:
  • building a robust framework and global index of economic opportunities in the low-carbon economy
  • mapping out practical and equitable low-carbon strategies being introduced/considered by countries, sectors, companies and citizens.

The project draws on AccountAbility's annual State of Responsible Competitiveness report with its 100 country Responsible Competitiveness Index and builds on UNEP's strengths in policy leadership, global convening and data consolidation. On this strong foundation, the goal is to pool knowledge, grow consensus and generate powerful analysis for policy-makers.

This project will be gearing up to the UN climate change negotiations set to take place in Copenhagen in December 2009.
