The AccountAbility Institute, established in 1995, is AccountAbility’s applied research and development arm. Our work seeks to examine and reinvent the key institutional dimensions of accountability:

· Organisational accountability -What tools and approaches will enable organisations to be innovative, effective and accountable?

· Competitiveness - How can markets be reshaped to reward social and environmental innovation?

· Collaborative governance - What kinds of governance and accountability mechanisms can secure the accountability and effectiveness of today's extraordinary multi-sector partnerships?

· Citizen participation - How can individuals have a say in the decisions which affect them, in our globalised world?

The Institute undertakes in-depth research on issues (e.g. collaborative governance, responsible competitiveness, supply chains, climate change, low-carbon innovation, water management); on sectors (e.g. financial services, pharmaceuticals, energy and extractives, information and communications technology, apparel and footwear); and on countries and regions (e.g. North America, European Union, Mid-East, G20, emerging markets and developing world).

Our approach

Our approach is customized to each project and builds on four core strengths:

· Analytics: creating reports, benchmarks, indexes and ratings, and using databases with significant sample sizes and dependable results.

· Engagement: building effective collaborations within and between organizations to tackle challenges that require teamwork – quickly, creatively and accountably.

· Incentives: designing awards schemes, innovation exchanges and other governance innovations that unlock creativity and generate change.

· Capacity building: on-site training and production of training materials to ensure that innovations become embedded at all levels within an organization, city or national system.

Organizations engage with the AccountAbility Institute to:

· Access market intelligence, by using AccountAbility Institute data and networks to discover unexpected patterns, possibilities and pitfalls.

· Demonstrate leadership and build brand value, by supporting AccountAbility Institute white papers and high-profile events.

· Develop winning strategies, by learning from both established leaders and energetic newcomers.

The AccountAbility Institute is led by director Alex MacGillivray. The analytics practice is led by Paul Begley; the engagement practice by Kate Ives; incentives, Yi Shi; capacity building, Cara Gallen. Projects draw on expertise from across AccountAbility’s global teams, and benefit from advice from the organization’s unparalleled network of business leaders, policy-makers, academics and social entrepreneurs.
