Ask Me Anything: Exploring the UK's Assurance Landscape

Demand for sustainability assurance in the UK is rising, even though assurance itself remains largely voluntary. Mandatory disclosure requirements are expanding, stakeholders are increasingly asking for verified data, and shifting regulation means that organizations must have accurate data to verify their claims.
In this edition of our Ask Me Anything Provider Series, AccountAbility spoke with two of our Licensed Assurance Providers, The Good Economy and JLL, to explore how they use the AA1000 Assurance Standard v3 (AA1000AS v3) with their clients.
Two key themes emerged:
- Although few rules currently mandate sustainability assurance, voluntary demand for assurance is growing faster than the rules that require it.
- The AA1000AS v3 meets that demand due to its unique value proposition. It tests the quality of governance and stakeholder accountability alongside the accuracy of data and is framework-agnostic, providing a key tool for the UK market.
Demand for Sustainability Assurance is Increasing in the UK
The UK market is experiencing significant growth in demand for sustainability assurance. This is driven by three interconnected factors, as explained by JLL:
- “Investors increasingly require credible, verified sustainability data to inform capital allocation decisions
- Stakeholders across the value chain – from employees to supply chain partners – expect transparent accountability on environmental and social commitments
- The regulatory landscape is tightening, with mechanisms like the UK’s Sustainability Disclosure Requirements (SDR) and anti-greenwashing rules creating stronger compliance imperatives”
Currently the UK is in a transition phase, where mandatory disclosure is on the rise, whilst assurance lags and remains largely voluntary. JLL explained that this has resulted in an “expectation gap” where organizations must disclose information, yet the verification of this information is often optional, leading to data credibility concerns.
The market indicators point to a transition towards mandated assurance requirements, however, today this timeline remains uncertain.
The AA1000AS v3 Meets This Demand
The AA1000AS v3 provides significant value not just in markets where assurance is mandated, but also in markets like the UK where voluntary assurance is on the rise.
Both JLL and The Good Economy highlight the key reasons behind this:
- Assures accountability, not just accuracy: The AA1000AS v3 does not just verify the accuracy of the data, it also assesses whether the approach to managing sustainability is robust and how accountable the organization is to those that it affects. The Good Economy explained that this supports trust and credibility building with stakeholders, showing that there are core governance structures and tangible evidence for how an organization is accountable for its sustainability performance and impacts.
- Covers E, S, and G assessments: The AA1000AS v3 requires an evaluation of all three factors as part of the assurance process. JLL noted that addressing the full spectrum of sustainability information, such as stakeholder engagement quality or the responsiveness of organizational actions to sustainability concerns, provides a holistic perspective that aligns with the UK’s evolving landscape of expectations around corporate accountability.
- Is framework agnostic: The AA1000AS v3 is flexible and can be used with other standards and frameworks. The Good Economy highlighted that this gives organizations a full assessment of the integrity of their reporting process. Both The Good Economy and JLL built on this to argue that adoption of the AA1000AS v3 can also help organizations to prepare for expanding regulations like CSRD and ESRS and build credible reporting practices. In essence, it ensures that processes are robust enough to meet mandatory requirements as they come into force.
- Safeguards against greenwashing and impact washing: The AA1000AS v3 tests whether stakeholder perspectives shape strategic sustainability and impact decision-making. The Good Economy explained that this helps prevent greenwashing and impact washing as it confirms that organizations measure and respond to stakeholder findings.
Supporting Mandatory Assurance Transitions in the UK
The AA1000AS v3 also holds unique value for the UK as the market transitions from voluntary to mandatory assurance.
JLL explained that the AA1000AS v3 plays a pivotal role during this process as “organizations that adopt rigorous voluntary assurance now will find themselves better prepared when mandatory requirements arrive. They’ll have mature data collection systems, established internal controls, and experienced teams”.
The AA1000AS v3 supports this through both types of engagements:
- Type 1 engagements focus on adherence to the AA1000 AccountAbility Principles, providing a strong foundation for organizations.
- Type 2 engagements evaluate both the quality of organization’s processes and the reliability of specific performance data, identifying where organizations need to improve their sustainability management systems.
Key Takeaways
As stakeholders in the UK demand more credible sustainability information, the AA1000AS v3 helps organizations to close that gap.
Both of our Licensed Assurance Providers came to the same conclusion: the AA1000AS v3 is a valuable tool for the UK market. This is because organizations that use the AA1000AS v3 build robust governance frameworks, processes, and procedures that allow them to mature in their sustainability reporting and assurance.
